The Green Bay Gamblers announced on Tuesday that forward McKade Webster has been named team captain. Webster suffered a wrist injury last season limiting the St. Louis, Missouri native to just six games. The Denver University recruit appeared in 59 games during his rookie campaign in 2017-2018, registering 11 goals and 19 assists.
“This year’s team is a veteran group and any number of players could have fulfilled the role of team captain,” says Gamblers Head Coach/General Manager Pat Mikesch. “The choice of McKade wearing the “C” was based on his leadership qualities and the respect his teammates have for him.”
Defenseman Xan Gurney and forward Ryan O’Reilly were named assistant captains.
Both Gurney and O’Reilly were acquired last February in a trade with the Fargo Force. Gurney has appeared in 89 career USHL games with Chicago, Fargo and Green Bay, tallying 15 points (3g &12a) and 143 penalty minutes. Gurney is committed to Western Michigan University.
O’Reilly was named to the 2018 USHL All-Rookie 2nd team, after notching 21 goals with Madison. The 4th round selection of the Detroit Red Wings has appeared in 109 career USHL games with Madison, Fargo and Green Bay, registering 35 goals and 31 assists. O’Reilly is committed to Denver University.
“Xan and Ryan are two players with a great deal of USHL experience,” says Mikesch. “Xan has two Clark Cups to his credit, and Ryan has the potential to be one of the top players in the league. Like Mckade, both also possess tremendous leadership skills and have the respect of their teammates.”
The Gamblers kick off their 26th season in the USHL this weekend with a pair of games in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the Fall Classic. The team returns to Green Bay for the home opener at the Resch Center on Friday, October 4 (7:05 PM).
