The Green Bay Gamblers will play the Madison Capitols in their last home-and-home series on Friday, April 22, and Saturday, April 23. These will be the tenth and eleventh meetings with Madison, and the Gamblers are currently 4-5 against the Capitols. The teams last played each other on Sunday, March 20 at the Resch Center, where Madison beat Green Bay 8-3. Saturday’s game will conclude the 2021-2022 USHL season for the Gamblers.
The Gamblers have a 22-34-3-1 record and are currently eighth in the USHL Eastern Conference with 48 points. Some players to watch for include Ryan Greene and Kent Anderson.
After playing in his 125th game as a Gambler last weekend, Greene will suit up for the Gamblers one last time after his best year in the USHL. One away from the 50-point club, the Boston University commit stands with 19 goals and 30 assists on the year, both numbers up from last season in which he produced 12 goals and 20 assists in only six less games played. Although the forward had a quiet past weekend, he has a history of playing well against Madison with five straight games of scoring points against the team, including two goals and six assists.
On the opposite end of time as a Gambler is Anderson. In his rookie campaign with Green Bay, the defenseman has been a great playmaking contributor. With 24 helpers, he stands as fourth overall in active team assists and has the most of all active defenders. Helping the Denver commit’s cause is a recent streak of point scoring. In the last four weeks, Anderson has one goal and six assists, including three points and his second goal of the season last weekend. Although on different career paths with the black and yellow, watch for both players to have an impact in the final game of the season.
The Capitols have a 29-28-3 record and are currently fifth in the USHL Eastern Conference with 61 points. Some players to watch for include Luke Mittelstadt and Ben Dexheimer.
Brother of Gamblers forward John Mittelstadt, Luke has been the best player production-wise for Madison this season. In his first full season with the Capitols, Mittelstadt has 55 points on 19 goals and 36 assists. This includes his last game which the Minnesota commit scored one goal with two assists to pair, giving him the hot hand for Madison. Throw in that the 2022 BioSteel All-American had one goal and four assists in the last weekend of play against the Gamblers, and he should be firmly on their list of players to prepare for.
Another defenseman, Dexheimer has shown his hand as a reliable playmaker for the Capitols. He leads the team in assists with 38, including three straight weeks of scoring an assist under his belt. Although the Wisconsin commit hasn’t scored many goals on the year, his last score came against Green Bay, something the Gamblers will consider.
