NELSON SHINES, TAKES RUNNER-UP IN STATE FINAL

Danny Nelson, Gambler affiliate and current forward for Maple Grove High School, helped the Crimson take runner-up in the Minnesota Class AA championship where they fell in a 6-5 double overtime thriller to Andover.

Nelson was a key player for Maple Grove all tournament, giving his team three assists in the quarter and semifinal matchups. However, where Nelson truly made his mark was in the championship game, giving the Crimson four assists in the contest. He helped his team all year, scoring 40 points on 16 goals and 24 assists, all of which were fourth best in their respective categories.

Although Maple Grove fell short of the Class AA title, the championship game appearance is the farthest they’ve gone in school history. Previously, the Crimson’s best finish in the tournament was the semifinals the 2020-2021 season.

The Maple Grove native was drafted by the Gamblers in the 2021 USHL Entry Draft. He was drafted in the second round with the #26 overall pick.
