Hockey Returns to Titletown!

After a 230 day hiatus, Gamblers Hockey officially returned to Resch on Friday Night.  With social distancing measures and mask mandates in place, the Gamblers took on Team USA.

Third-year forward Kyler Grundy got the Gambles on top early in the first.  Fellow veteran Cam Thiesing added the assist.  Team USA would get on the board a few minutes later and the first period would end 1-1.

Team USA would take the lead on a goal from Logan Cooley.  The second-period ended 2-1 in favor of the visiting team.

Early in the final period newcomer Cam VanSickle would tally his first goal as Gambler and tie it up. With 15 minutes left in the final period Team USA found the back of the net.  After several rush opportunities, the Gamblers would ultimately come up empty and fall to Team USA 3-2.

Hockey in 2020 continues on Halloween Night as the Green Bay Gamblers play host to the Dubuque Fighting Saints.  Puck drops at 7:05pm.  Tickets are available online at GamblersHockey.com or by calling the box office at 800-895-0071.

Gamblers Name New President

Green Bay (Oct. 13, 2020)The Green Bay Gamblers and PMI Entertainment Group have announced that Jeff Mitchell has been promoted to president of the hockey organization. Mitchell has served as director of business & promotions since 2008.  As team president, Mitchell will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Gamblers and will continue to report to PMI Entertainment Group President Brendan Bruss. The Gamblers are owned by PMI.

“Jeff has done a great job since coming to the Gamblers and has earned this opportunity,” said Bruss. “He is well versed in all aspects of the hockey organization and has proven his leadership abilities. I’m excited to be able to promote a capable and qualified individual that is already on our team.”

As director of business & promotions, Mitchell was responsible for the day-to-day business operations of the Gamblers.  Under his leadership the Gamblers have consistently ranked near the top in league attendance, shown consistent growth in corporate sponsorships, and introduced promotions that have gained national acclaim.  On the hockey side, Mitchell has served as a liaison to the hockey staff and assisted Bruss in the hiring of head coaches Jon Cooper, Eric Rud, Derek Lalonde, and current head coach Pat Mikesch

“I have been blessed to work with many quality people during my time with the Gamblers while having a front-row seat to watch the best in the world play and coach the sport I love”, said Mitchell.  “I am grateful to Brendan for his years of guidance in preparing me for this opportunity. Mitchell grew up in White Bear Lake, Minnesota and attended Northern Michigan University. Prior to his time in Green Bay, Mitchell worked at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and Northwest Sports, which owned and operated hockey and baseball teams in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Topeka, Kansas.

Four Players with Gambler Ties Selected in 2020 NHL Draft

(Green Bay, WI) – Green Bay Gamblers defenseman Mason Lohrei and forward Jackson Kunz were both selected in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.  Lohrei in the 2nd round (58th overall) to the Boston Bruins and Kunz in the 4th round (113th) to the Vancouver Canucks.  Also taken in the draft, Gamblers Affiliate list player Jackson Hallum, 3rd round (91st) Vegas Golden Knights and former player Tanner Dickinson, 4th Round (119th) St. Louis Blues.

Lohrei, Kunz, Hallum and Dickinson become the 59th, 60th, 61st and 62nd players with Gambler ties to be drafted by an NHL team.

Lohrei, led all USHL Defenseman in assists (29) and was second in scoring (37).  The Verona, Wisconsin native, participated in the 2020 Bio Steel All-American Prospects Game and was named 2nd Team All-USHL in 2019-2020. Lohrei is committed to Ohio State.

Kunz spent the 2019-20 season at prep school power Shattuck St. Mary’s in Faribault, Minnesota.  In 45 games, Kunz tallied 40 goals and 29 assists.  The Grand Forks, North Dakota native has appeared in seven USHL games with the Gamblers over the last two years, recording two goals and an assist. Kunz, who was selected by the Gamblers in the 1st round of the 2018 Futures Draft, is committed to the University of North Dakota

Hallum, was chosen by the Gamblers in the 2020 USHL Entry Draft.  As a junior at St. Thomas Academy in Minnesota, Hallum registered 35 points (18 goals & 17 assists) in 25 games. The Eagan, Minnesota native is committed to the University of Michigan.

Dickinson appeared in eight games for the Gamblers during the 2018-19 campaign. Dickinson spent this past year in the Ontario Hockey League with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

The Gamblers 26th season in the United States Hockey League begins on Saturday, November 7, as they play host to the Muskegon Lumberjacks at the Resch Center. Gamblers Release Roster

(Green Bay, WI) – The Green Bay Gamblers released their roster for the 2020-2021 season on Thursday.  Roster features 12 players who appeared in 15 or more games last season in the USHL. The players reported to Green Bay in mid-September.  In preparation for their season opener on Saturday, November 7, players will take part in daily practices and four to five exhibition games in October.

The roster is highlighted by forward Jesse Tucker and defenseman Mason Lohrei.  Tucker returns for his third full season in the USHL.  Tucker was tops on the team in goals (18), points (43) and second in assists (25). Lohrei, led all USHL Defenseman in assists (29) and was second in scoring (37).  The Verona, Wisconsin native, participated in the 2020 Bio Steel All-American Prospects Game and was named 2nd Team All-USHL in 2019-2020.

The Gamblers bolstered their forward group through the Cedar Rapids/Madison Dispersal Draft, selecting 2019-2020 USHL All Rookie Team member Ryan Kirwan. Kirwan tallied 25 goals and 16 assists last season for the Madison Capitols.

Players on the roster with USHL experience include forwards; Jake Schmaltz (13g & 19a), Kyler Grundy (11g & 21a), Camden Thiesing (12g & 16a), Alex Servagno (9g & 12a), Ryan Greene (3g & 2a), Trevor Smith (1g & 3a), Braiden Simmons-Fischer (1g & 2a), defensemen Michael Ferrandino (1g & 12a) a veteran of over 200 USHL games and Xan Gurney, who despite missing the entire season with a shoulder injury, has over 100 USHL games and two Clark Cups to his credit.

Players on the roster who have seen limited action in the USHL include forwards Matt DeBoer, Jackson Kunz, defensemen Jarod Crespo, Tyler DesRochers and Jake Ratzlaff.

Rookies include forwards Jackson Hallum, John Mittlestadt, local product Sawyer Scholl, Greg Spitznagel, Upper Peninsula native Brayden Stannard, Cam VanSickle, defensemen Dylan Abbott, Damian Carfagna and Cade Penney.

In between the pipes the Gamblers boast 2020 USHL Phase 2 1st round pick Matt Davis and 6th round pick Jed Baloitti.  Davis played last season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with Spruce Grove and Baliotti attended the Berkshire School in Sheffield, Massachusetts.
