The 2018 NHL Entry Draft took place this past Friday and Saturday at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas. Current Gambler Jackson Perbix (4th Round/Anaheim Ducks), and alumni David Hrenak (5th Round/Los Angeles Kings) and John Leonard (6th Round/San Jose Sharks) were all selected.
Perbix arrived in Green Bay after completing his Minnesota High School hockey season at Elk River. In 17 USHL games, Perbix notched a goal and three assists. The Notre Dame commit is slated to play the entire upcoming season in Green Bay
Hrenak played this past season for St. Cloud State. Hrenak was named to the NCHC All-Rookie team after compiling a record of 14-7-2, 2.11 goals-against average and .919 save percentage. The Slovakia native played the 2016-17 season in Green Bay.
Leonard, who was a teammate of Hrenak in Green Bay, notched 28 points in 33 games during his rookie campaign at UMASS-Amherst. Leonard played two seasons in Green Bay (2015-17).
Since the team’s inception into the USHL in 1994, 53 Gamblers have been selected in the annual NHL Entry Draft. Thirteen alumni played in the NHL this past year.
USHL SETS DRAFT RECORD
With 57 players selected, the USHL set a league record for number of players taken in the annual draft. Seven players with USHL ties went in the first round and 45 of the 57 players taken suited up in the USHL this past year (17-18). No other junior league in the world had more players taken.
