This past Saturday (2/27) was an historic night for the Green Bay Gamblers. A sellout crowd of 8,397 tossed a record 7,052 bears at the team’s 17th Annual Teddy Bear Toss.
All bears collected are given to the Pediatric Care units at Aurora BayCare and charities that focus on the family. The capacity crowd was the second largest in team history.
In February, the Gamblers continued their winning ways posting a record of 5-1-2. Overall, the team owns the third best record in the 17-team USHL with a mark of 27-13-6. The Anderson Cup, given to the regular season champion, is within reach, as the Gamblers trail first place Cedar Rapids by just five points.
February was also a month of huge crowds. Nearly 25,000 fans made their way through the Resch Center turn-styles for the five Gambler home games. Overall, the Gamblers rank 2nd in the league in attendance, drawing 81,591 (Per Game Average: 3,547) to their 23 home games.
On Saturday, March 5, the Gamblers are changing their name to the Green Bay Cheese. The team will be wearing special edition cheese themed jerseys, game socks and player names will be changed to various types of cheese. For the first time in Resch Center history, fresh cheese curds will be available at concession stands. A running total will be kept on how many pounds of cheese curds are consumed. The goal is a ton! Promotions throughout the game will also focus on cheese.
The Gamblers are also home on Friday, March 4, Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20. For a list of promotions log onto the team’s website at www.gamblershockey.com Away from the ice the Gamblers are hosting a Celebrity Waiter Dinner at Grazies on Tuesday, March 15 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. The players will serve as the waiters with all tips being donated to the American Heart Association.
Members of the Green Bay Gamblers spent Monday morning personally delivering bears to the children who reside at the Aurora BayCare Pediatric Care Unit in Green Bay.
This past Saturday night marked the 17th year of the event in Green Bay. A sellout crowd of 8,397 fans tossed 7,052 bears in the first period after a goal scored by captain Sam Saliba for the Gamblers in a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Steel.
In the 17-year history of the Teddy Bear Toss the Gamblers and their fans have donated over 97,685 teddy bears to local hospitals and other charities across Northeast Wisconsin.
Dating back to 2000, the Teddy Bear Toss is a one time yearly event, where fans are asked to bring a new Teddy Bear to the designated Gambler game. When the Gamblers score their first goal, fans are encouraged to throw their bear(s) on the ice. In its first year, the team collected a little over 400 bears. This past year 7,052 bears were collected.
The Green Bay Gamblers defeated the Chicago Steel 2-1 in front of 8,397 fans at the Resch Center on Saturday night. With the win, the Gamblers improve to 27-13-4-2 on the season.
Scoring for the Gamblers were forwards Sam Saliba and Jason Dhooghe.
Adam Huska recorded the win between the pipes for the Gamblers with 19 saves on 20 shots on goal. With the win, Huska improves to 19-7-2 on the season.
The Dubuque Fighting Saints defeated the Green Bay Gamblers 5-0 on Friday night at the Mystique Ice Center in Dubuque, Iowa. With the loss, the Gamblers fall to 26-13-4 on the season.
Adam Huska and Kevin Reich split time between the pipes for the Gamblers. Combined the two netminders made 16 saves on 21 shots on goal in the loss.
