Gamblers Storm Back from Early Deficit, Defeat Lincoln

The Green Bay Gamblers defeated the Lincoln Stars (11-19-7) by a 3-2 regulation mark Friday night at The Icebox in Lincoln, Neb. With the victory, Green Bay ran its regular-season record to 19-13-5 through 37 games, increasing its season points total to 43.

In his fourth start since returning from injury Jan. 5, Cam Hackett recorded a season-high 35 saves in the contest, although one of the two goals he allowed in the contest gave Lincoln a 1-0 advantage midway through the first period.

But behind the sticks of Matt Weis, Evan Tironese and Dawson Cook – who tallied their twelfth, sixth and eighth goals of the season, respectively, in the contest – the Gamblers stormed back to win their eighth road game of the season.

Green Bay will travel to Cedar Rapids (22-14-1) tomorrow night before returning home to the Resch Center Friday, Feb. 7 against Chicago.

Gamblers Drop Matchup against Fighting Saints

The Green Bay Gamblers (18-13-5) were defeated by the Dubuque Fighting Saints (24-10-1) by a 4-2 regulation mark Tuesday night at the Resch Center. Though the loss dropped Green Bay’s season win percentage to .500, they remain tied with Cedar Rapids for third place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference with 41 points.

Connor Hurley scored his ninth goal of the season in the second period, while Drew Best tabbed his tenth score of 2013-2014 soon after to tie the game 2-2. But Dubuque responded with two late goals against Jared Rutledge (who saved 32 of the Fighting Saints’ 36 shots on the night), putting the game away late by a 4-2 score.

Green Bay will travel to Lincoln (11-18-1) Friday night and Cedar Rapids (20-14-1) on Saturday before returning home to the Resch Center to take on Chicago (17-18-2) Friday, February 7.

Jared Rutledge named USHL Reebok Goaltender of the Week

Today the United States Hockey League named Green Bay Gamblers goaltender Jared Rutledge as  co-recipients of Reebok Goaltender of the Week with Ed Minney of Team USA

Rutledge allowed just one goal over two appearances for the Gamblers during the weekend, posting a 0.54 goals-against-average and .979 save percentage in two victories.  He stopped all 19 shots he faced before being relieved in the third period of Friday’s 6-0 win against the Chicago Steel.  The 19-year-old followed up with a 27-save performance in the 2-1 overtime win over Team USA on Saturday.  It was the 18th win of the season for the Skokie, Illinois native, third most among League goaltenders.  Rutledge has played more minutes than any USHL netminder this season (1,804).

The Gamblers return to action Tuesday night at the Resch Center versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05pm.

Gamblers spend morning handing out bears

Members of the Green Bay Gamblers and Community First Credit Union spent Monday morning personally delivering bears to the children who reside at the Aurora BayCare Pediatric Care Unit in Green Bay.

This past Saturday night marked the 15th year of the event in Green Bay. A regular season record 7,517 fans in attendance tossed 6,525 bears in the second period after a goal scored by defenseman Colin Sullivan for the Gamblers in a 2-1 overtime victory over the Team USA.

In the 15-year history of the Teddy Bear Toss the Gamblers and their fans have donated over 78,517 teddy bears to local hospitals and other charities across Northeast Wisconsin.

Dating back to 2000, the Teddy Bear Toss is a one time yearly event, where fans are asked to bring a new Teddy Bear to the designated Gambler game. When the Gamblers score their first goal, fans are encouraged to throw their bear(s) on the ice. In its first year, the team collected a little over 400 bears. This past year 6,755 bears were collected.

Bears from this year’s event will also be donated to various non-profit groups in the Green Bay area.
